Start with safety
A collision can leave you shaken and unsure what to do next. Get appropriate medical attention and call emergency services when needed. Follow responders’ instructions. Gathering information should never put you or anyone else in danger.
Capture what you safely can
The Idaho Department of Insurance recommends photographing the scene and involved vehicles and gathering driver, insurance, and witness information when safe. Record the incident number and where any towed vehicle is taken. Read the Department’s auto-claims guidance.
Keep the originals
Save original photographs, dashcam files, messages, and correspondence in a secure place. Keep a backup. Avoid editing or deleting material related to the collision, including material that seems unhelpful. Write down what you remember while it is fresh, and distinguish what you saw from what someone else told you.
Document the effect on your life
Keep medical bills, appointment information, receipts, and records of missed work together. A brief, factual record of how your injuries affect ordinary activities can help you explain your experience. Be accurate; there is no need to exaggerate or minimize what you are facing.
Get help preserving evidence
Some evidence may be held by businesses, witnesses, or other parties. Mortimer Injury Law can help identify what may matter and take appropriate steps to request, collect, and preserve it. You do not need a perfectly organized file before contacting us. Your recovery comes first, and a conversation can help clarify the next steps.
